Abstract
Alcohol use disorder is a medical condition characterised by a reduced ability to control or stop alcohol use, despite its adverse impact on health. This article highlights alcohol-related harms and outlines assessment of an individual's alcohol use risk using screening tools. It also explores the crucial role of primary care nurses, who are uniquely positioned to build trusting relationships with patients over a longer period of time, to facilitate discussions to identify individuals at risk of alcohol use disorder and deliver stigma-free, non-judgemental care. The importance of practicing professional curiosity is explored, alongside how this can improve outcomes by identifying any hidden issues or safeguarding risks.
