Abstract
Higher specialty trainees (HSTs) in respiratory medicine will provide the next generation of consultant respiratory physicians. Their future career perspectives and goals will shape the landscape for the coming respiratory workforce. The British Thoracic Society (BTS) surveyed HSTs in 2016,1 20202 and 2024.3 The results highlight important considerations around subspecialty popularity, interest in academia and research alongside a desire for more flexible working and aspirations for consultant job plans. These developing trends need serious consideration to ensure that the future workforce remains sustainable and fit for purpose.
